Newsletter (August/October, 2008)

August 12, 2008 our teen performers had returned home from Prague!

August 3-9, 2008 Prague opened its doors to more than 7000 participants from all over the world who took part in the “REAL LIFE” festival. It was a second festival.
Idea and Mission Statement in 2003:
In August 2003 the YMCA Europe (European Alliance of YMCAs) celebrated its 30 years anniversary and 7500 young people, most of them from European YMCAs came to the city park in Prague to celebrate for a week. This was the first time an international YMCA youth event of this size was organized in Europe. The program included Morning Singspirations, hundreds of workshops and talk shops, sports competitions and scout activities, displays and exhibitions, Ten Sing performances and stage shows and a big concert with "The Tribe". One evening was devoted to ecumenical services and one day the Festival took to the streets of Prague and dominated the city for some hours with very colorful programs. It was a great success, and inspired the Executive Committee of the YMCA Europe to plan for a new Festival in 2008.
As the Festival in 2003 focused on European integration, it is now the vision of the YMCA Europe that the Festival in 2008 shall focus on our place in the global dimension. In the process of identifying a theme for the Festival we asked two fundamental questions:
What do young people strive for?   What do young people fear?
The theme was decided to be REAL LIFE and the Mission Statement of the Festival was formulated:
REAL LIFE HAS NO BORDERS THEREFORE WE COME FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WITH A DEEP WISH TO LEARN AND RESPECT TO LOVE AND UNDERSTAND SO THAT WE ALL MAY BE ONE IN THE LIGHT OF JESUS CHRIST

September 7, 2008 YMCA Novosibirsk had sponsored a festive event for children and parents.

All finalists were gathered at Central park where we had concluded the regional contest:
I am healthy = I am happy!
The contest started in March and terminated in September, 2008.
The mission and goal of the contest was to concentrate the attention of children, parents and community of our city and region how to teach our children to be healthy.
3 age groups: 3-6; 7-9; 10-14.
Many participants had sent their art work and literary mottos from various Novosibirsk regions and counties.
YMCA Novosibirsk had 3 wonderful NGO partners who had helped to make this event a happy and memorable one:
•    Region’s Children’s Fund (Novosibirsk branch)
•    Institute of Humanity with the support of Regional and Metro School Districts.
About 65 children got awards and prizes as winners. All other participants were also noted for their works. Though the weather was not so friendly the presentations on stage of various fairy tale characters and circus had helped to the merry spirits of all who had come.
The next step is to publish the most successful and bright works and also produce scenarios for the kindergartens when teachers would be able to organize an environment in play and learn form to how to be healthy and be happy!

The Novosibirsk basketball school league had started its new season.

YMCA Novosibirsk is the co-organizer and sponsors the youngest sub-division ages 13!
The main concept and idea of this league is to popularize the game and provide opportunities for teens to play more basketball games than the school program does offer.
